Well...if I understand your question correctly (?), I've just tried that.
I had a couple of frames left on a roll of HIE and thought I'd try
photographing one or two of my slides. I projected them onto a white
matboard and let the camera (see below) make the decisions.

To back up a bit, using what I interpret as the thoughts from the group, I
tried a roll of HIE in my Minolta 700si, set the ASA at 200, put a #25
filter in front, and let the camera make whatever settings struck it's
little fancy.

I developed the film in XTOL 1:1, ...and got rather flat negs. (I was
getting low on XTOL so I had to economize; in the past I've gotten
(gotten?) better results from XTOL with no dilution)

The contact sheet was also obviously a bit flat, but that can be remedied
by printing with a #5+ filter. (I could also try soaking that bit of film
in selenium, which I may try if I don't get an adequate print from the neg
as is)

At any rate, the neg & contact have that wonderful grainy ethereal look
that IR gives, and as soon as time permits (probably will be my millenium
project) I'll try printing it.

So in a rather roundabout rambling way, I hope that answers your question.
