If you don't have much money, I would go with Nikon...
The Canon lens system is relatively comparable, with the exception that
at lower end models its AF is faster. The F5 is comparable to the Canons
in AF speed, but the F5's AF works BETTER when shooting vertically.
Nikons have a wider choice of lenses for the bodies also.
The Zeiss lenses are awesome... even legendary but the lens choice is
limited.
More importantly, if you are short on cash, you will spend less $$ in
TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) with the Nikons if you are moderately
tough on your gear. The cameras are generally more rugged and therefore
your repair costs can be lower in two respects -- direct repair costs,
and lost business/$$ because the camera is being repaired.
I shot the Goodwill Games in New York City this Summer (yes a bunch of
the imagery was shot on HIE and EIR) and played around with some of the
new Nikon Lenses -- their new 400 2.8 is awesome (sports shooters who
were using Canons and tried the 400 2.8 on an F5 remarked that it made
them consider switching to Nikon)
Final note: If you can hold off purchasing a new body for a bit, you
might want to keep in mind that the successor to the N90s is due out
w/in the next 6 months....
