The best thing to do is to understand that x-raying film (with the exception of
the high-speed film like TMZ) will not hurt it. I've traveled to the British
Isles and just left my IR film in with my carry-on luggage. No fogging, no
problem. I would think that you are just asking for problems when asking for
your film to be hand checked. Of course, this could well be different for 120
or sheet film.
A caveat here is that film going into baggage or through the mail could well get
a considerably higher dose of x-rays, as they are using new machines that can
cause fogging. Also, outside the US and UK, the amount of x-rays your film can
be exposed to can be considerably greater.
