That person is a bit off base. The silver in the emulsion is in the form of
a salt, e.g. silver iodides, chlorides, nitrates etc. Though metal
detectors can be set to detect salts they are close enough to background
levels as to create a lot of false alarms so is impractical to use in that
manner. Such a detector may well be set off by the salt in your body before
it is set off by a package of film.
So in practical terms the film is undetectable in a plastic or paper
container.
My suggestion for 35mm HIE: bulk load in plastic cassettes and carry them
in your pocket.
