IR film counter question

I've seen people post various solutions to the film fogging from
IR film counters, like taping over most of the IR LED, but a
thought came to me today while trying out a test roll of HIE with
an 87A filter.

The 87A has such a deep cutoff that HIE barely responds to it --
multiple-second exposures required at f/5.6.

But a quick test with my stereo and VCR confirm that IR remote
controls still work just fine through the filter. Has anyone
with an IR sprocket counter tried mounting this sort of deep IR
filter material over the LED? I would guess it could almost
eliminate the fogging, yet still allow the sprocket counter to
work. But I don't have any cameras with IR counters, so I can't
test it myself.

I suspect the only difficulty would be the thickness of the
filter material, which is thicker than the tape people have
tried. But I don't know how much clearance there is at the
counter LED.
