I made the big mistake of listening to the "perceived wisdom" for
processing HIE when I started, and discovered the hard way...
I've been developing other B&W films for 20 years using Paterson System
4 tanks, and have always been a "twister". In other words, I agitated
the films during development by rotating the spool in the tank (first
10s of each minute) using the special slotted handle provided for the
purpose by Paterson.
When I started using HIE, all sources implied it was better to be an
"inverter" (i.e. agitate by inverting the whole tank, 2 or 3 times every
minute, rather than by twisting the spool).
The first four films I put through (using the "inverting" method) all
had the characteristic dark marks aligned with the sprocket holes.
Being thoroughly disenchanted, I went back to my old "twisting" ways,
and I've never had the problem since.
So: let's twist again, like we did last Summer!
