Fw: Ilford SFX 120 Filter (Was Re: Ilford SFX 120 & personnal info)

Jean-Francois Neron and Bertha Adamson asked about SFX200 and
Ilford filters respectively:

To get anything like an "infrared effect" with SFX200 you really have to
use either a B+W 092, Hoya R72, Kodak Wratten 89B or Heliopan Infrarot
695 filter. The glass ones are made from Schott glass type RG695 or
equivalent which has 50% transmission at 695nm. Ilford can supply a
polyester 75mm square filter specifically for use with SFX200. It's supposed
to be more scratch resistant than the gel types. Unfortunately it's not
available in a larger size that you need for use with medium format wide
angles.

If you can find a supplier, I find Konica 750nm film (120 and 35mm) very
easy to use, mainly for landscapes. You can load the film in daylight.
It has excellent sharpness, very fine grain and the advantage of giving
infrared effects, light foilage, enhanced wood grain etc. even with a dark
yellow or orange filter. It is very insensitive to green light, you don't need
a red filter to cut out what would be excessive exposure from green.
You can leave the filter on the camera and still see to focus. It's low
sensitivity to green coupled with high IR sensitivity can give very enhanced
separation of green tones in landscapes that look a very similar colour to
the eye. In addition I find the Exposure Index changes very little from OG550
(orange) to RG715 (IR) filters, its just the scene contrast, darkness of blue
skies and whiteness and translucency of leaves which changes.
If you try Konica make sure you give sufficient shadow exposure, around
EI 12 (unfiltered measurement) as a start and don't overdevelop.

I've included the Konica info because Jean-Francois said it was his first
try at IR, he'll probably get closer to what he expected from this film.

Good luck, Bob Parsons.
