As someone who ran out of cartridges once while spooling HIE, I
should note that the usual bulk roll in 35mm is 150 feet, not
100, so the number of rolls, and the savings, are higher than
suggested earlier.
I have never used gloves to spool HIE, since I don't touch any of
the film that gets exposed. I just load it using my usual bulk
loader, except of course it all has to be done in the dark. The
sales clerk at Glazer's looked at me like I was nuts when I said
that, but really using a bulk loader isn't much more complicated
than loading an SLR, so if you can do one in the dark, you can do
the other.
Practice cutting leaders in the dark without cutting off your
fingers or wasting too much film. Then save all the little
snips from the HIE leader and use them for testing whether a
particular bag, box, bellows, etc. is IR-tight.
Also, practice pre-taping the spools and assembling them in the
dark.
Once you're ready to do the real spooling, put on some soothing
music, kill all the darkroom lights, and remember that the film
is inanimate and won't respond to threats or frustration. If you
bulk load the whole roll in one sitting without turning on the
safe lights, you'll get so used to the darkness that you'll spot
tiny light leaks you never knew about. (After about an hour or
so I can actually see across the room by the glow of my Gralab
enlarging timer, well enough to mix another martini.)
The price noted above is well below listed retail, but not an
especially low price -- it's within $10 of what I last paid for a
fresh roll at Glazer's in Seattle, and more than triple what I
paid last month for a roll that had sat in the cooler until it
expired. (I've never had any trouble with HIE that had expired
if it was kept continuously refrigerated, and the expired roll is
now in my freezer waiting until I have enough cartridges empty.)
