Your interpretation is correct - I don't believe that the FAQ is, however.  As
the waves are longer, diffraction should be lessened.

BTW, I seldom shoot my IR images at an aperture wider than F8.  Diffraction has
never been an issue with me.  One might do their own comparisons.
