Just that in American English, a "Torch" usually means a big flaming stick,
such as the villagers use to chase the monster through the woods in
Frankenstein movies, or some device emitting a flame. I could just imagine
saying to my housemates, "I didn't mean to burn down the house - I was just
checking the shadows on my lith print". :-)
In the US, generally we refer to a handheld light-emitting battery-powered
device as a flashlight. Although, I guess that, too, can sound rather scary.
There are other vernacular differences but I found that one the most amusing.
