I have a Patterson (as far as I recall - but it is the fuctionality
that counts - see below) archival print washer that I really like.
The thing I like best is the agitation function:
The washer consists of a rectangular box. Inside the box is a
separator frame. Each print is inserted into a separate slot in
this frame.
Water enters the washer via a little plunger mechanism. Even a minute
flow of water is enough to keep this plunger in motion to rock the
separator frame back and forth. I think that without this agitaion
you could get dead spots, where paper is in contact with something
and hence no water flows past that spot. I suspect that you could get
residues of fixer (or whatever you are trying to wash out) at such
spots.
I have seen many archival washers without such an agitator. I
would not buy one.

BTW, I often see a buildup of air bubbles adhering to the prints during
the wash. Every now and then I pull the entire frame up and down a few
times to break lose these bubbles. Are these bubbles related to the
agitation? Can someone with a non-agitating archival washer please
comment?
