I generally aim for a file size of 40-80k for my images.  Knock the scan
down to 72dpi to start, as your monitor won't resolve anything more than
that anyway.  Then place the image on your Website and go to
http://netmechanic.com/GIFBot.ht (great site), entering the location of the
image.  The site will optimize the image with varying degrees of
compression.  Select the image just before the changes  become unacceptable
and save that image.
