File size and quality are two different things.
If I am scanning an 8x10 print, I scan it at 36 ppi. That will give me a
file that will display at about 4x5 images on a screen. The key is to get a
nice tonal curve and apply an unsharp Mask to the file. This can all be done
in Photoshop or in some of the better scanning programs. If you want the
file to be displayed at about it's original size, then scan at 72 ppi.
300ppi scanning is best suited for files that you will want to print.
