They don't always hand inspect each roll. I just traveled with a couple of
rolls and they didn't try to open the canisters.  They just put it in the
basket and did a general inspection of the baggie containing the canisters. 
(Maybe it depends on the airport or how you look. People have thought I was
many things but I've never been suspected of being a terrorist.)

Also, regarding exposure of EIR.  My best results ranged from EI 200 to 400
with 320 often the magic number.  I am in Southern California, too, so I
recommend bracketing from 200 to 400.  My early tries included EI 100 which
were all overexposed.
