I have used a modified camera like this for demonstrations of infrared imaging
at local high schools for the last 20 years or so. While the camera was made
originally for industrial applciations, and uses "C" mount lenses. The simple
removal of the IR blocking filter made it quite practical for the purposes I
have been using it for. The only "trouble" was that once the filter was removed
the lens was too far from the CCD to focus accurately at infinity. The filter
"extended" the focus plane further from the lens than where it would be without
it. So I loosened the CCD position adjustment bracket and slid the chip forward
a bit and now can focus on far objects with no difficulty.
Actually the camera I used was a color camera now that I think of it ... but
the principle is the same.
