Possibility of loading B&W IR HIE in daylight?

I think it's possible to load HIE in daylight, without
fogging, but it will take a little bit of advanced
work. Below is my theory on how it can be done.
In complete darkness open up the film casette and tape
a piece of black paper (a 35mm by 1 foot piece of
paper cut from a scrap of medium format 120 paper
leader would work nicely) to the film. Now roll up the
paper leader around the film and you'll end up with a
spool of IR film protected from light; it will just be
the spool, without the metal canister. You just have
to be very careful that the roll does not come
unwound! So I suggest putting a rubberband around the
roll. Also it might be necessary to use a shorter
length of film to make sure everything fits within the
small plastic spool. (Similar to 220 medium format
films).

I know someone who's sits all day on their butt
surfing the web is going to say it won't work because
the IR light will bend around the edges of the paper
leader and fog the film. To this I reply: Get out and
try it before you dismiss my idea. It should work,
since I've done similar work with 120 IR film. See my
web site www.homestead.com/infrared
The biggest potential problem is that when you go to
unload your rewound film it won't be rewound tighly,
and will thus fog.

Peace Rolland Elliott
