Why freeze infrared film?

Granted that the electromagnetic spectrum is a continuum and words like
"heat" and "light" can be subjective..........If IR film is sensitive only to
light and not heat, why does everyone recommend storing it in the freezer?
Perhaps it is not related to this question at all, and is a function of
instability/short "life-expectancy" of the emulsion..........which is
retarded by freezing?
