using IR for scanners

Just read an interesting note on nl.foto, about the anti-scratch mode 
of a Nikon scanner....never really understood how it did this, 
apppears that it uses an IR-scanning session to distinguish dust from 
image-details....makes sense, since the image doesn't contain any 
IR-reflection (remember using an exposed piece of slide film as 
IR(absorbing) filter?), so all IR-reflections are dust or scratches
