sabattier effect
For Larry Mankin I repeat my message as it appears that he lost it. Hope
Larry reads it this time.

Larry,
I have some experience in generating the sabattier-effect some years
ago. I recall the following: I developed my prints (B&W) during 60
minutes, which is more or less standard for multigrade paper. The best
is to use negatives with high contrast. After about 15 seconds of
development I exposed the paper for 1 second to light coming from an
ordinary 25 watt electric bulb, which was hanging above the development
dish at a distance of about 80 cm (32 inches). After this short
exposure, development is continued for about 45 seconds as usual. By
doing so you get very nice effects. You have to experience a bit by
varying the moment of exposure (i.e. after 20 or 25 seconds of exposure
in the dish. etc.). Do not vary in the duration of the exposure, so keep
it at 1 second. Otherwise you get too many variables! I got reasonable
results. I have a nice picture of a bare tree and branches. I haven't
got time today, but I promise you to put this pic on the internet one of
these days for you. As far as I know, my method is not called 'the
sabattier-effect', it's more like a pseudo-sabattier effect!! But it's
still very interesting and challenging.
Greetings,
Jaap Los
