Re: EIR Overexposure / OM-1

Hello,

just a few additional remarks on what Bertha Adamson and Barry Bean
wrote on exposing Kodak EIR Color Infrared Film:
I live (and take most of my photos) in the Blackforest region in the
southwest part of Germany. I've arrived almost at the same results as
Bertha - so perhaps her hints are not only valuable for Californian
light & weather conditions, but generally applicable.
With a yellow filter, I normally bracket with ISO 250, ISO 320 and ISO
400. I think, alternatively you could also rate the film at ISO 250 and
bracket over +/- 0.5 steps. In environments where low IR radiation is to
excpected (alpine landscapes with few trees and lots of stones,
seashores and the like), you should bracket with ISO 200, ISO 250 and
ISO 320 (or even lower ?).

Another thing: If you want even more spectacular effects than the yellow
filter produces, try a moderate red filter (everything similar to Kodak
Wratten 25 should work fine). You get more contrast and especially nice
colors: Leaves, that look magenta with the yellow filter, now show some
color between yellow and red. Together with water or a deep blue sky you
get wonderful pictures. However, exposure is a little bit more tricky
with a red filter. I meter through the filter, set the my camera to ISO
400 and bracket between +/- 1, using 0.5 step intervals. I don't know if
these meter settings apply in general and if it is true, that the film's
sensitivity is higher with a red filter - perhaps the meter of my camera
(an old Praktika MTL 3) simply has got some problems with the filter...

Happy photographing an always good (infrared) light,

Eckhard
