Infrared: See the World in a Whole New Light

After you've experimented awhile with taking pictures, you
may begin to get a little bored with reality. Fortunately,
photography offers many avenues for exploring the world
through fresh eyes, to see in ways that the human eye
cannot. Many photographers experiment at some time with
black & white film or digital image enhancement -- but if
you want to try something really different, enter the rich,
surprising, and challenging world of color or black & white
infrared photography.

All of the colors that we can see with our eyes represent
only a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Infrared light is all around us, but its short wavelengths
fall beyond the "red" end of what humans can see. Film that
is sensitive to infrared light reveals images that look
quite odd and otherworldly.

For instance, a conventional photo of green treetops against
a blue sky would not show much contrast. However, a black &
white infrared picture of the same scene would show the
vivid contrast of a winterish vision. Green leaves reflect
infrared radiation to keep plants from drying out, and thus
appear icy white in an infrared picture. Meanwhile, a blue
sky turns black because (fortunately for us) the atmosphere
filters out most of the infrared light that the sun hurls at
the earth. But clouds glow whiter than ever.
