Digitial IR and chioce of cameras

I'm curious about the choices that are available in digital cameras. I took
a look at:
http://www.echeng.com/digital_photo/ir.html
and I see he has used Nikon Coolpix 950
Agfa ePhoto 1280
Sony Mavica FD-7
Olympus D-220L
The results look great considering that he doesn't have to deal with all
the issues of handle IR film to get these results.
Now I also know that there was a thread about using that Sony Nightvision
vied camera. If I remember right, most of the uses were to preview the IR
situation before taking the real shot on film - is this true? Why would
someone go with the video (larger camera not as good still results) when
the digital single shots are available? Was there another reason for using
the video?
On the choice of digital cameras, are they all at least near IR capable
with the use of the 87 series of filters? Is any particular model more
sensitive?
It seems like the features that are needed are:
- LCD for preview
- external lens that is threaded for filters - preferably doesn't rotate
- anything else in particular for IR?
