www.portfolio.com is a part of the Warp10 network... (network = we have
more than one website)
In 1997 Warp10 mentions in it's annual report "it's decision to exit the
high speed networking business and change to an indirect selling strategy"
even though their websites seem to focus your attention on the former..
Now I'm no business expert but from the figures on their corporate info
(http://www.warp10.com/corporate/corp_investor.html) it seems they're on
something of a downward trend and if it continues they may pull the plug on
any of their sites without any warning as they deem necessary
(http://www.warp10.com/term.html#14).
As for any privacy concerns... well they don't collect any personal
information "except when such personal information is provided to Warp 10
on a voluntary basis." i.e. "may be gathered during the registration
process, in connection with content submissions, postings in chat rooms or
other public areas, and transactional areas"
This information will not be given to anyone except that "Warp 10 reserves
the right to disclose and sell such personal information: (a) to Warp 10
partners, its affiliates, subsidiaries and third party agents...." who
currently consist of "IBM, Channel 7, PhotosToGo, and other major and minor
players in this market" And their privacy policies are...?
Having looked through the site it does have the distinct appearance of
being one big information gathering scheme under the ruse of providing
services for collaboration over the internet...
Want to sells tuff to creative professionals... "Warp10 Network offers
traditional and innovative sponsorship, partnership and direct advertising
opportunities for business-to-business marketing to this audience."
But that's just a cynic's view for those that don't read ToS and other
policy pages when signing up for these things. It's still your choice.
IMHO there are other strategies to attracting people to your site that will
probably get you more visitors than a site like this.
Cheers
Ben
