Oh, Eckhard, you were a little faster than I with posting ... ;-)
However, I already had the opportunity today to have a look
at some sample negatives and prints, and I also have a can of
5 cartridges in my hands ;-)
>From my conversations with Mr. Kohorst and Mr. Schroeder (both from
MACO, the latter being the head of MACO's photo unit), I can confirm
the information that was summarized by Eckhard. Here are some additions:
- During their R&D phase starting in the beginning of this year,
MACO tried three different emulsions with sensitivities up to
780nm, 820nm, and 840nm. They decided to go for the 820nm emulsion
as the results are more or less comparable to Kodak's HIE/HSI (at
least more than Konica's) but without the short lifetime and storage
restrictions of the 840nm emulsion. The chosen 820nm emulsion allows
for a storage time of app. 2 years at 3-5°C.
- All three formats utilize the same polyester base (manufactured
by Dupont). This is the same base that is already used for the
other films manufactured by MACO. Opposite to HIE/HSI and most
other films, this base is clear. This fact and the high Dmax makes
the film very suitable to reversal processing in order to produce
b/w slides. MACO recommends Kodak's kit for this.
- In the US, MACO products are distributed via Cachet/fappco.
However, you've no chance to get films from there before February.
- From the sample negatives and prints I've seen, I can say that
MACO IR 820
+ seems to be a little less grainy than Kodak HIE/HSI,
+ shows some halation effects for certain subjects, although
by far not to the same degree as HIE/HSI.
Now that I got samples of this new film as well as Kodak TSF SO-033
and Ilford SP 816T, I really should take some time and go out to
find some appropriate subjects for test shots! ;-)
Too bad that the weather here in northern Germany is so ugly right
now ...
