It goes into far more detail than I think you'll need for making
slides from new, good-condition prints, but for general lighting
setup, choice of lenses, exposure, etc., an excellent reference
is Kodak publication M-1, _Copying and Duplicating in
Black-and-White and Color_. It's a paperback book with examples
of copy setups for many difficult situations, like restoring
contrast when copying faded prints, lighting paintings so that
the texture of the brush strokes is visible but not too deeply
shadowed, etc.

If the format of your prints doesn't match the format of a 35mm
slide, you can fill the slide in one dimension and crop the
unfilled dimension with tape -- a good photo dealer will have
special tape for this, heat reflective with adhesive that
shouldn't damage the emulsion next to the tape.

I've occasionally made slides from my prints. For convenience I
usually use Polaroid instant slide film, but that does require a
Polaroid processor. A 36 exposure roll is around $18, not cheap,
but there's no processing charge and you have ready-to-mount
slides in under 10 minutes. With so many companies converting to
digital, used manual processors for Polaroid slide films are
available for $20-$30 -- they come up on ebay all the time.
