yes the 35 mm base is shiny but if you wet it, (i snipped a little of the
blackened leader)
it will kind of swell up as it absorbs water. From Roland's post I surmise
this coating
is the place where the anti-halation dye resides. The 4x5 film is matte on
both sides when dry.
