You will also be interested by the web sites dealing with
remote-sensing : satellites which take images in multispectral
mode have often different IR band (Near IR, like 800-900 nm,
and "Far" IR, 1000 to 1200 nm).

In any remote sensing book, you will probably find some spectral
response of different objects, the effect of air/water transmission,
etc...
