87c gel and digital camera on Olympus 2500L need advice--PLEASE!

Ok..got the 87c filter, and put it in a holder that fits over the lens(you
squeeze these metal bands and it fits over the lens nicely-well, over the
glass filter attached to the lens-) however, part of the holder covers the
infrared sensor on the camera barrel, no matter how I twist it..
so, I need new ideas ..I thought about cutting the gel(but it was 27$ and I
don't want to do it unless its a good idea, and placing it under the screw on
clear filer I already have on it...unless someone knows a filter holder that
won't block the area I mentioned..the one I have is a Voss professional gel
holder.
Also, I did get 2 photos with the gel placed over the lens, but the infrared
beam
seemed to go out and stay on a LONG time--is this bad for the camera?
and most of the time it would not make an exposure. would appreciate any
advice..
Thanks LR
