TMax developer is a very active developer. I pretty much got bulletproof
negatives the first time I tried using it with HIE. When I reduced the
dilution to 1:9 the negatives were better but the highlights were pretty much
blocked up. By this time my development time was getting down close to 5
minutes and I don't like to do inversion processing for that short of a time.
I guess I could have tried developing at a cooler temperature, but since I had
D76 already I gave that a shot.
D76 gives nice gradation with HIE. I will emphasize that "nice" is a relative
term and the results that you are seeking may well be completely different from
what I expect. If you like what you are getting from TMax developer then by
all means stick with it. The examples on my Web site are, for the most part,
from D76. You may wish to see if that is what you are looking for. We don't
need to reach a consensus.
