do you do this all in the dark so the ends aren't burned?

YES!

I'm surprised that hardly anyone is interested in this color infrared film. 
At first I thought people on this list didn't use this film because the 
price of almost $20 a roll is very expensive, but maybe its because they 
don't like the film?  I guess this is a mainly B&W IR photography list.
