I'm a Forester who uses (and takes) both color and B&W infrared photos for a living. Pine trees (not all conifers are pine trees BTW) will show the "wood" effect to differing degrees. Here in the "Great Lakes" area of the U.S., Jack Pine trees show up very dark while Red Pine trees have a considerably lighter IR signature. Hemlock, Cedar, Tamarack (an "evergreen" that drops its needles in the fall), Balsam Fir, White Spruce, Black Spruce all show up a bit differently on B&W or color IR film.

To answer your question, how strong the wood effect will be will depend on the type of "pine" tree you are photographing. By and large, conifers show the wood effect to a lesser degree than hardwoods.
