That might certainly be an explanation, but I then still hope that modified
processing could help a bit. Maybe by adding sodium sulfite as suggested
(without any comments on the motivation for it) in one of the postings
collected in our listowner's HIE slide processing overview.

Unfortunately, if Rolland Elliot's estimate of a 6-stop difference in film
speed relative to HIE when processed in the Kodak kit is correct, it would
be a bit slow for my taste. But I might still give it a try.
