Re: xtol wrecked my HIE!

BTW, not that this relates to HIE in specific, but on another list (pure
silver) I brought up the fact that Kodak has a snafu with XTol, in that you
must as said below have a minimum of 100 ml developer full strength per roll
of film or 80 sq. inches of film if doing sheets (4 sheets). What this
means, of course, is that in a 16 oz. tank with one reel of film to develop
you can only go up to a dilution of 1:2 at most. IN talking with Kodak,
they don't recommend higher dilutions, in fact, they recommend 1:1 as the
best because you have the greatest acutance increase going from full to 1:1.
This was a big deal to me because other teachers in my dept recommend a 1:3
dilution with Xtol as being the best. I went ahead and did two things with
my students: made them all use 1:1 and also NO presoak (Xtol doesn't
recommend one) which for beginning photo students is being out on a line,
but all got wonderful negatives. So, as far as Xtol goes, it works great at
1:1, which is what the original person starting this strain said she was
using. I also read somewhere, though that there were problems with some
batches of Xtol and I cannot remember what the deal was, but nevertheless,
here is the Kodak URL:
http://www.kodak.com/US/en/service/alphabetical/ Download the PDF from
them on Xtol at this URL:
http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/support/techPubs/j109/j109.shtml
and both sites will have a phone number for tech help that you can use

This wouldn't explain why the 1:1 dilution failed, but if you processed a

failure -
