Re: Filter/Speed/Meter & DON'T meter using a Nikon Camera

The problem with using an internal camera meter is that many camera
manufacturers install a IR blocking filter in front of the silicon photo
diode making their meters rather useless for IR photography.
I have been fixing Nikon cameras for quite some time and I can tell you from
personal dismantelling experience that ALL 35mm Nikon cameras have a blueish
green IR blocking filter over the metering cell. Although, like many people
have said, you can calibrate your meter, I have found that it only works
well for bright sunny conditions, not low light. Therefore I have changed my
view on using internal camera meters. I wouldn't use NIKON camera meters for
IR light readings because they do NOT meter IR light due to this blocking
filter.
Take a look at Nikon's F5 brochure. Inside of it they have a camera that is
cut in half and one can clearly see the blueish green IR block filter over
the metering cell.
I recently removed the blue green blocking filter from an N90s and it gives
much more accurate IR exposures.
Most people wouldn't mess around with a $700 camera, but I'm a little
obsessive about IR photography.
Peace, Rolland

determine my exposure time."-George
