And I’ve used my N90s camera for about 5 years with many good results with
IR photography. However, you are fooling yourself if you think you are
metering IR light. You are metering visible light and it is just a
coincidence the IR exposure is fairly close to the level of vislble light.
The fact of the matter is that most IR pictures are taken during bright
sunny days and under these conditions the amount of IR light to visible
light is fairly consistent. So it is no surprise one can get good results.
However, you are NOT getting good results because your camera can meter with
IR light. All Nikons I know of don’t meter IR light unless modified by a
technician. It is one thing to get good pictures and it is another to know
WHY you got good pictures. One day I’ll buy a computer and make a web site,
showing the removed filter and how opaque it is to IR light, untill then
you’ll just have to take my word for granted.

The blue green filter Nikon uses is extremely effective in blocking IR
light. I’ve looked at it through an IR camcorder and it is jet black when
viewed with IR light. I’m not sure if the FM2 has an IR block filter, but I
know all cameras since the FG do, and for sure all of the autofocus Nikon
bodies. I’m 99.9% sure the FA has it and most likely the FE has this filter
too.

“I have used my Nikon 6006 and FM2 for IR for a good many years with, what I
consider, fairly decent success. I do make adjustments to the readings as
the scene calls for it, but am able to get pretty close each time. “-GEORGE

“I have been shooting infrared since
93 using my FE and FA and have had little problems with my results. Is it
mostly the autofocus cameras, which to me would make obvious sense.”-
