I agree with George. In panchromatic BW photography, there usually "must"
be detail in the highlights for the image to be successful. This is one of
the critera photography judges use in competition.
However, I believe that a creative eye and mind can interpret a scene in
ways other than what is usual and accepted...IF it is in the photographer's
vision. It's called Art. As far as I am concerned, every image is unique
and must be viewed as such. Applying standards to any creative endeavour
makes for a rather narrow view. This is something that must be remembered
when judging photographs.
So, in my long-winded statement, If blocked highlights work for the image,
then blocked highlights are appropriate.
