RE: Detail in IR highlights
I'll have to stick my hand up as being a little less arty than some of the
previous comments although I do in part agree with them. There does come a
point where a total lack of highlight detail in large areas can be
exceptionally distracting. The fact that you have asked the question in the
first place suggests that you would prefer to have a bit more highlight
detail in your images. If that is the case then what we think is
irrelevant ;-)
Ordinarily in BW photography, a lack of highlight detail would suggest
either over exposure, over processing or a combination of the two.
This still holds true to some extent for infrared film although it does get
a bit tricky with HIE, as most of my attempts to increase the highlight
detail to my satisfaction ended up with very flat negatives. Bright objects
*seem* to reflect more uniformly the deeper you filter into the infrared,
leading to an apparent loss of subtle higlight tones.
Konica IR is different again, mainly because of it's reduced IR sensitivity
and there is no real excuse for a lack of
detail.
