I hand color tons; have used the polymax RC Art and it was ok for coloring;
it does have tooth, kind of a sandpapery tooth. But I much prefer fiber. I
have hc'ed Ilford MGIV matte for a number of years, and just started using
Forte fiber Elegance semi matte and love it much better because it does not
dry down so much and look so dull and compress in the shadows; it shows
highlights incredibly, and is also warm tone. I would highly recommmend the
Forte. It is only $59.95 a box for 50 11x14s so is not that expensive.
Aside from these two papers there is also Luminos RCR Art Rough Surface as
an RC but with Wilhelm research stating as it does the lack of archivalness
of RC papers I would not waste my time hc'ing RC. I will try Luminos
Flexicon Variable Contrast FB Warm tone next as it also is said to be good
for this process. I have hc'ed Agfa MCC #118 and that performs beautifully,
but the texture is teeny weeny pebbly catchy surface, in other words, there
is a texture to it that the paint picks up. That paper is a bit more
fragile and brittle than the Forte. I really cannot say enough good about
Forte, and have heard that Berger is similar if not the same. But Flexicon
and Forte are supposed to be the two "high highlight contrast" papers out
there. Oh, and also, the semi matte gives a bit of gloss that the Ilford
MGIV matte does not have, yet it still absorbs/grabs the paint well albeit
semi matt and not totally matt. Excuse my sp. it is late and I am tired!
