clear or black EIR?

Hello,

Short of sounding like a green horn I will ask this question anyways.
I use print film 99.9999% of the time (HIE & Delta 100.) And just
recently I fired off a couple rolls of EIR. I have heard a couple of
things that just don't jive with me. I was told once that the
un-exposed EIR between the frames & sprocket holes should be clear, and
I have hear from other sources (the photo lab) that the unexposed spaces
sould be pure black. And I have heard from the list that if the labs
equipment has IR sensors, that the sprocket holes will show signs of red
(fogging).

Now the EIR I got back from my lab is black, with what seems to be a
little fogging around the sprockets holes. Not enough to affect the
image area. SO...... what is correct, clear space or pure black???

Thank you,

-Dan
