Maco and Pyro
Hi folks,
Just finished some tests with PMK and 120 Maco Infrared. I shot the
infrared through 2 different 89b filters. One a Wratten from Kodak which was
very dark, the other an 89b from CoCam (yay Clive!).
My Pentax 67 meters through them about a stop and a half faster than my
Nikon n90s. I meter through the filter with my film speed set to 500 ASA. It
gave me an effective film speed of about 6 ASA or 1/6th of a sec at f16
(yes, it was a sunny day). This is what I shoot for the 35mm Maco also.
I shot several rolls in Zion's Nation Park and shot 2 from a new batch of
film sent from Cachet just a couple weeks ago.
My first attempt with PMK pyro was at 74F for 14 minutes. They came out just
about clear. (You know, the "no hope" type of IR development?) Anyway I
thought I'd give the second roll a try at 80F for 15 minutes. Not much
better, and the emulsion just kind of melted off in a gooey mess. I though I
tried the third back at about 72 with X-Tol (straight) for 14 minutes.
(Thinking they were under exposed) and even used the Hydrogen Peroxide
method of increasing film speed. (Did nothing for me, but it was the first
time I tried it and I'm not sure everything was perfect.) So I did the next
roll in X-tol for the same amount of time and got fairly thin negs. I may
have to do the bleach and redevelop in dichromate to get something
printable.
These 5 from Zion's must have been under exposed. But the lesson here is
don't soup them in anything warmer than 72F or your images begin to look
like Polaroid transfers. (Have your paper ready!)
I shot two rolls at a local garden recently. These were shot through the
filter at 3 ASA to 16 ASA (I hate bracketing on a 6x7, it burns film
quickly). I was much more careful with watching speeds this time.
I souped the first one at 71F for 20 min with agitation every 15 sec. The
speed came in around 4-5 ASA. Very slight fogging in the rebate area and the
negs look like pretty much what one would expect with PMK. The second roll I
developed with twice the developer and Sodium Metaborate (20ml of PMK and
40ml of sodium Metaborate) and developed for 15 minutes with agitation every
15 seconds.
These had much more density. In fact they really stood out. I'll have to
print some from each to really tell how the times effected the films. With
the way they looked, I think they have a grade or two more contrast than my
typical pyro negs.
As for any other technical info, I have a softened and filtered water supply
that has a neutral ph. I mix the PMK and other chems in distilled water.
Formula from Hutchings book.
Feel free to comment or question. I hope this is of some help to those on
the list. If others have times and dilutions that have worked please let us
know.
I'll also post some images from the PMK Maco films later this week.
Thanks all,
R. Gary Hall
