I used Richard's concept for cold cathode illumination (plus acrylic
mirrors) and built a 2x2 viewer that will accomodate vertical, horizontal,
and superslide format. This entire illuminated viewer can be constructed
for less than $300, and the illumination device (which comes from Digi-key
and Radio Shack, plus a WalMart acrylic shower mirror) by itself costs
about $50 to build. The expensive part is of course the lensing, which
runs about $90 per lens from Edmund Optical-- their 6x widefield magnifier
with the dual coated achromats-- you need to flip the lenses in the metal
barrels so you can get your eye close enough for full field, thus a teeny
tiny bit of pincushion. Each lens focuses independently.
