A very nice article on "The History of Color Photography" by Heinz Richter is now available on the f32 website, http://www.f32.com/Articles/art020.htm
It's particularly interesting that the very last paragraph of the article mentions the new technology introduced by AGFA to increase film speed by a factor of ten - this and other new developments keeping photography with conventional materials ahead of digital (for the near term, at least).

Another article that you may have to go to a technical library to find is "Analog Image Processing in Modern Color Photography" by Joachim Lohmann and Johannes Willsau (both of AGFA - who would have guessed?) appearing in the Journal of Imaging Science and Technology, Vol. 43, No. 6, Nov/Dec 1999, pp 550-559.  This article explains some of the emulsion chemistry voodoo used to boost color accuracy and saturation, edge acutance, etc.
