I also used a Viewmagic for my first 4x5 stereo.  The lack of magnification inspired
me to build the Brewster/Wheatsone viewer.

I think to get effective 3d images you need a wide field of view (requires
magnification unless your film 'chips' are 12"x12") and sufficient resolution.
Medium format has enough resolution, though 4x5 is definitely better in spite of
what the calculations predict.  6x9cm would be great since the aspect ratio is
closer to our natural field of view.  But you'd have to use mirrors since the chips
are too wide to mount side by side and not have the eyes diverge when viewing.
