It's part of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Well, from Houston Hobby Airport to the hotel, see:
http://maps.yahoo.com/py/ddResults.py?Pyt=Tmap&doit=1&newname=&newdesc=&newtname=&newtdesc=&newaddr=hou&newcsz=&newtaddr=200+North+Centennial+Way&newtcsz=Mesa%2C+AZ+85201&Get%A0Directions=Get+Directions
According to the driving directions, it is 1,189.9 miles,
and an estimated 21.9 driving hours. 963.7 of those miles
are on I-10.

I'll be driving from Austin, which is relatively
close (approx 165 miles) from Houston. A passenger/
driving assistant would be quite welcome. But your
best bet is probably to jump on a low-priced flight.
