The current (June 2000, Vol. 11 No. 6) issue of "Optics & Photonics
News" has an interesting article entitled "Sharpest Field Tables" where
depth of field calculations are derived considering not only Gaussian
optics (ray tracing), but diffraction effects as well.  The author, Ray
J. Wallin, has a web site implementing a depth of field calculator based
on the article at:

Some of the terminology and descriptions are not as clear as they could
be (the author is a student at St. Thomas University in Minneapolis,
MN), but it is well worth a look.
