I've been thinking a little along those lines, but I thought I'd have 
to find teflon strips or something.  The polished wood surface just 
doesn't seem slippery enough for the rack and pinion scheme I'm 
thinking about.

But acrylic!  Why didn't I think of that?  I build lots of stuff out 
of plexiglass.  Dang, that's a good idea.
