I don't disagree with anything Eric said.

My comments were not meant to explain DOF calculations.  I was just 
offering a hypothesis to explain why the Sputnik manual could specify 
such seemingly far-fetched DOF numbers.  I think they just specified 
a very large value for "acceptable fuzziness."

While I can't match their numbers exactly, they appear to have used a 
COC of about 0.07 mm.  Myself, I would use the more conservative 
figure of 0.05 mm.  My number would yield a shallower DOF, but 
sharper pictures.
