The diameter covers the opening (there's plenty of room inside-- as
previously mentioned, the simple lens that comes with the viewer is just
glued on) which is all you need, and there's enough room (it's snug) to
put in the thicker lens with no case modification, and the compression of
the case holds it there-- though I also used a little self stick tape to
be sure the lenses wouldn't slide around. 

It turns a piece of junk viewer into a pretty nice viewer!
