Joel already mentioned that the previous software was Smart List.

I currently administer Majordomo as the sys admin where I work.  When
I took my current job I started with Majordomo rather than deal with
the problems of the other mailing list software.  As they say in
alt.sysadmin.recovery "All software sucks.  Some just suck less."
