Umm, Ansel Adams? Edward Weston?  :-)

Seriously, I know that Adams has written about it in "The Negative." If
memory serves, it is a compensating developer which actually "tans" the
film and so reduces the contrast range. Dick Koolish (from Stereo new
England and Photo 3D) tells me that it's back in a big way these days... he
says it's all the rage on the alt. photo. processes list... you might get
some info there...
